My girls and I are sitting in our school room doing arts and crafts on this dark grey, rainy day. As they sit creatively at their art table, I am gazing outside into the storm. The powerful wind and rain is beating relentlessly at the windows. We have to shout in order to talk. I get back from laying towels down from the five leaks we now have in our ceiling. Our neighbor's house across the street is but a blur through the downpour. Similar to driving in hard rain, expect without the windshield wipers giving moments of clarity - there is not seeing past our front yard right now.
My attention is drawn to the small red-blossoming tree that is planted outside the window. It is being bent half over, the leaves and blossoms are violently flapping in the wind and being pounded by the sheets of rain. It reminds me of a verse in Scripture, "...the root of the righteous will not be moved." Proverbs 12:3. Though this seemingly delicate tree is being tossed and battered by the rain, it is not uprooted. It is firmly rooted in the ground.
May I be like this tree outside. When the difficult and unfavorable times come, may I be found firmly rooted in Christ. Though I may seem to be battered on the outside, I will not be moved. My security, my strength, my health and well-being is found deeper still. I will be able to say with Paul, "But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves; we are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed." 2 Corinthians 4:7-9. I can trust in the sure foundation of Christ, for He will never disappoint or fail. In Him I can stand secure. Jesus tells us all, "Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and acts on them, I will show you whom he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock; and when a flood occurred, the torrent burst against the house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who has heard and has not acted accordingly, is like a man who built a house on the ground without any foundation; and the torrent burst against it and it immediately collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great." Luke 6:47-49.
I am wise to do the necessary work before the storm comes, so that I'm not caught off-guard when the wind and the rain begins to beat. While the sun is still shining and the skies are clear, I can be abiding in Him; practicing the coming (humility before the LORD in prayer), the hearing (reading His Word), and the acting (obeying). That way, I am familiar with my Foundation and trust in His faithfulness and strength, and so I am not shaken when the torrent is rattling my leaves, for I know He is there.
So, when the rain is coming down in sheets blanketing my vision and battering my outsides, may I be found as Hezekiah was, "He trusted in the LORD, the God of Israel...for he clung to the LORD; he did not depart from following Him, but kept His commandments..." 2 Kings 18:5-6.
Hold on, little tree, the storm won't last forever.
Shingle Bells
"Shingle bells, shingle bells, shingle all the way! Oh what fun it is to be in pain that won't go away. Hey!"
This is our theme song this week. Poor Corey has been diagnosed with shingles. Not fun. He's in a lot of pain, but has a good sense of humor about it. Although he can't do much, he is still able to participate in our family fun. He is making an excellent Twister spinner (you know, the person who spins the dial that decides what foot or hand goes where) while me and the girls play!
The good news is that he has several days off of work. The bad news is he is in pain and is quarantined since very few people here have had chicken pox or the immunization for it. So, unfortunately it is going to be a very boring week or so for him until he is no longer contagious. But even after he is clear of being contagious he is expected to be in pain for 4-6 weeks. I guess that means a lot of Twister spinning for him!
Happy Mother's Day
I'm thankful for my mom. She is such a blessing to me and everyone that comes near her! I wish I could be there celebrating this Mother's day with her. If I were, we would perhaps go out and get a pedicure in the morning, followed by a nice leisurely lunch together with the family...ahhh...that would be so wonderful, wouldn't it, Mom? But, since I am unable to (10,000 miles is a little bit of a drive), I can write about some of the things that amaze me about my mom.
1. My mom is always smiling. :)
2. My mom is an amazingly generous person, both in heart and action.
3. My mom is faithful to pray when she says she will.
4. My mom's love and care for me and our family is so clearly evident.
5. My mom's ears and arms and heart (and often times her home) are always open to receive someone in need.
6. My mom is not only a wonderful and caring mom, but a dear friend and fellow sister in Christ.
I love you, Mom! Happy Mother's Day!
As for me, I don't know exactly what my kids have in store for me for Mother's Day, but they are such thoughtful sweethearts that I wouldn't be surprised if they have a little something planned. BUT, what they don't know is that I am looking forward to surprising them with a special breakfast and cards letting them know just how much I love being their Mommy; that the best gift I could receive for Mother's Day is them! I'm looking forward to loving and serving them on this special day because I simply enjoy serving them - they aren't my work, they are my blessings! So, when they wake up tomorrow morning, I will say to them "Happy Happy-To-Be-Your-Mommy Day!"

Spring Break in Pictures
We've had Spring break this week...a bit late, but hey...a break at any time is nice! Our week has been full of fun activities, as well as, times of just relaxing. Here are some pics from my phone of our week so far:
Lazy mornings (this is our new kitty!)
Playing in our little pool
At the play area in town
Doing some arts and crafts
Activities that didn't make the photo reel: eating out at the kid's favorite restaurants, baking lots of delicious goodies just for fun, going to the "movie theatre" (aka: our living room) in the middle of the day, and more!
And we still have another two days to pack in some more fun! Good times!
Five
In honor of Cinco de Mayo, here are 5 recent happenings with us...
1. Corey has been working LOOOONG hours at the hangar for the past few weeks as they disassembled one plane to ship back to the States, and are currently replacing the engine in another plane. LOTS of work!
2. I have begun teaching English to elementary-age kids (16 kids so far). Catelyn is helping me with the class too! So fun to serve with my daughter. I am also helping local English teachers and/or college-students (12 adults so far) practice their English skills in a discussion-style setting. We have been discussing cultural differences between Aceh and America. Very interesting and I am loving this opportunity!
3. Corey and I just celebrated our 9-Year Anniversary! I love this man!
4. Catelyn has only two weeks left of 1st grade. We have had such a good time homeschooling this year, but we are also looking forward to the summer break! WOOHOO!
5. Our cat, Phil, has been missing for almost two months now. So, we recently acquired a new cute little kitten, who we first named Sunset, but later changed it to Lily. Ella keeps very busy terrorizing that poor kitty. But, Lily sticks around and takes it, so I guess it can't be too terribly bad, right? Ella is heard throughout the day coaxing her: "Here, kitty kitty kitty kitty!"
And in case you were wondering how we are going to celebrate this holiday (can we even call it that? perhaps we'll call it An-Excuse-to-Make-Yummy-Mexican-Food!) I think I'll make some enchiladas! YUM! And since it's hot here...perhaps a trip to the local water park and speak Indonesian with a Spanish accent...or better yet, confuse everyone and speak Spanish to them and act confused as to why they aren't understanding me! Should be a good day!
Happy "An-Excuse-to-Make-Yummy-Mexican-Food" Day!
