A Lamp to Her Feet

"You need to be done now."

Our daughter enjoys taking long showers. It's simply extended play time in her opinion. Actual washing is of much lesser importance.

"I'm almost done." comes her reply after being reminded to get out of the shower four previous times.

Minutes later, as she exits her own imaginary water park, she notices the slightly frustrated look upon her daddy's face.

"I'm so sorry I disobeyed, Daddy." comes her soft, sweet voice as she scoots past him while wrapped in a too-big towel dragging behind her. His heart melts with forgiveness.

This week we have been talking about the importance of knowing God's Word; of knowing the Truth. And that the Truth will guide us in the right way.

"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." Psalm 119:105

We've also been learning about the Helper {the Holy Spirit}, and how He helps us to understand the truth and also reminds us of the things that Jesus has taught us.

God's Word and His Spirit - such great gifts from our Lord! We have been praying that our kids would see just how rich a gift these really are!

A few moments later, our daughter reappears {now dressed in her jammies} and immediately the patter of her 5-year-old feet moves across the room and she reaches for the iPad nearest her daddy.

"Honey, it's not time to play on the iPad, it's time for us to read The Chronicles of Narnia." was his reply.

"But, I need to read my Bible so that I don't disobey again." pleads this more-wise-than-her-age beautiful heart.

Tears welling up.

Our little girl just displayed, before our eyes, a greater understanding of the power of God's Word than she realizes at her tender age.

The moment she reached for that iPad she declared alongside the Psalmist,

"How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Your word. With all my heart I have sought You; do not let me wander from Your commandments. Your word I have treasured in my heart, that I may not sin against You." Psalm 119:9-11

O Lord, please give each of us a heart that recognizes the power of Your Word and treasures it deeply. Amen.
